However, these IDEs are typically much more complicated than Wing so they are only recommended if you have experience with using them. There are also other full-feature IDEs, such as Eclipse, that you can use to write Python. Using a full function IDE such as a Wing makes writing and especially debugging Python programs much easier for new programmers so Wing is used throughout this book. Some Python developers will write their entire programs in a command-line interface or one of the simple Integrated Development Environments (IDE) such as IDLE. ![]() ![]() “'This guy was very emotional about it,” Fries recalled in a 1995 interview. ![]() During a test session with new PC users, she introduced a prototype cartoon duck that walked participants through the software. Microsoft program manager Karen Fries, one of the project’s strongest proponents, had already observed the enthusiasm these digital guides could inspire. Ostensibly, these would more concretely embody the the humanity users were already instinctively assigning to their computers. To capitalize on these findings, Microsoft Bob’s developers decided to add anthropomorphic “assistants” to guide users through the program. Users who delivered their review on a different computer were more truthful (and therefore more critical)-essentially replicating the level of “politeness” used when evaluating a person to their face, rather than to a peer. As further tests would reveal, evaluations of a computer’s performance were significantly more positive when people completed them on the machine that was actually running the program. In the early 1990s, the pair developed a theory: People unconsciously respond to computers as if they are human. To navigate between different applications, users clicked on familiar household objects: a pencil and paper for word processing, an envelope for email, or a checkbook for electronic payments.ĭespite its down-home name, Microsoft Bob had been designed to reflect cutting-edge social science research conducted by Stanford professors Clifford Nass and Byron Reeves (who were eventually hired as consultants for the nascent program). Instead of the menu- and text-heavy interfaces that had come before, the program transformed the desktop into the virtual interior of a home. Personally launched by Bill Gates in 1995, Microsoft Bob was supposed to revolutionize home computing by making software friendlier for first-time users. Before there was Clippy, there was Microsoft Bob. ![]() ![]() ![]() In fact, it is inspired by the blocks of blue clay, called 'massi' in Italian, which are found in the vineyard. These vintages are identical twins, two perfect wines. The name Masseto is a tribute to the territory. I tasted the 20 vintages together for comparison when I scored this wine, and then I tasted this 2016 edition alone about a month later to confirm my impressions. There is great tightness and laser focus to the fruit. You gain better perspective as the wine opens in the glass and reveals deeper layers that were not immediately apparent on first nose: dark fruit, spice, sweet tobacco and black cherry. Despite that considerable mass, this Masseto remains delicate and graceful. Full-bodied, yet so tight and integrated, with weightless tannins that frame the wine in a precise and curated fashion. There is no overstating the sheer power and richness of this iconic vintage of Italy's groundbreaking Merlot. The center of the vineyard now is home to the new Masseto winery and an adjacent tasting room built into a pre-existing farmhouse. The Masseto story begins in the 1980s when. The first thing you'll notice is the thickness and concentration of the fruit that makes an immediate impact on all the senses, in terms of appearance, aroma and mouthfeel. Often nicknamed the Italian Petrus, Masseto is an outstanding single vineyard wine crafted from 100 Merlot grapes. It represents an encore performance, continuing the string of successes that is bringing Italy to the forefront of the wine world. Here, in the 1980s, a series of Merlot vines were planted on a slope that had long been left fallow, and in 1986 the first year of Masseto wine was produced. Like the 2015 Masseto before it, this vintage is a seamless wine of the highest pedigree. The 2016 Masseto is a thunderstorm of emotions, but it manages to keep them under perfect control. This is the first time that an Italian wine has earned 100 points in successive vintages. Ripe cherries and forest floor are discerned on the nose and pair perfectly with the crunchiness and freshness of the fruit in the mouth.Masseto has pulled off back-to-back home runs. You can consider the Cab heavy Ornellaia as an alternative to Sassicaia or Solaia, and the Merlot based Masseto as a competitor to Chteau Petrus. ![]() The deep purple hue immediately stands out at first sight, ready to show a strong identity. This vintage comes close to out-powering the bouquet of the 2019 Masseto also hitting the market now.Ī perfect blend of power and opulence on the finish that displays the typical traits of the 2020 vintage. This is a special treat, and the 2020 edition offers a clear identity for Massetino. Located in the vaunted Bolgheri region of Tuscany, Masseto was first released in 1986 and quickly gained a reputation as one of the world's most sought after and extremely allocated wines. This was a warm and sunny vintage, and you feel the power of those sunbeams locked within the dark, opulent and concentrated fruit on display here. Masseto is a rare, single vineyard wine made entirely from Merlot grapes grown on the vineyard bearing the same name. As time passes WITHOUT you making a match, the camera pans closer and closer to the block assemblage until the assemblage collides with the screen, which knocks out a few of the blocks that you have available. As this is going on, you have a little slot machine playing itself onscreen, and if it has a match, you may luck into Bonus Time (you are only given blocks of one color until all blocks of that color are cleared) or Super Bonus Time (you are only given wildcard-color blocks, so you can basically haphazardly rapid-fire at the screen to clear as much out as possible). ![]() You basically have this assemblage of colored blocks slowly rotating around a core, and you need to shoot and match the colored blocks (as the angle of the assemblage of blocks and the camera allows at the time) to knock them out until only the core remains. I haven't played the PSN releases of TG-16 games for the PS3/PSP/Vita, so I'm not sure how the available games' presentation compares on those platforms (but of course, the Wii has the biggest, most diverse TG-16 selection of the bunch).Īs far as the ArtStyle games go, Cubello is easily one of my most-played games on the Wii - if you've ever played Tetrisphere on N64, the concept is not too dissimilar, but it's got a minimalist point-and-click interface, and is something like a 3D implementation of a "match-3"-style puzzle game. It's perfectly playable on either, but both this approach and the bilinear approach on the Wii strike me as feeling "emulator-ish," like I'm playing through an emulator on PC, but I don't have access to fiddle with the video settings to get to what I really want. This would be all well and good, but it seemed to me that the pixels were scaled a bit unevenly, so, say, one vertical row of pixels may be a little bit wider than the next. On the Wii U VC, the only game that I've actually gotten the chance to try out so far has been Bonk III, and unless I'm mistaken, it seems like the Wii U approach to TG-16 VC is to use a nearest-neighbor, more pixelly scaling than the Wii's bilinear scaling approach. The Japanese Wii Shop Channel includes additional 240p PC Engine releases, such as Ghouls 'n Ghosts and Cadash. ![]() On the North American Wii Shop Channel, I know that the Castlevania: Rondo of Blood release CAN display in 240p (one reason among a million to own this particular release of the game), as can the TG-16 version of Street Fighter II': Champion Edition (which at 700 points is the cheapest way to own SOME VERSION of SFII on the Wii VC). Graphically, TG-16 VC on the Wii is one of the only Wii VC platforms that largely does NOT offer 240p for those with an SDTV or Framemeister or such - the vast majority of games always play at 480p or 480i with a bilinear filter applied that can come off a bit blurry versus SNES, NES, Genesis, etc. Okay, so granted, my experience with TurboGrafx on the Wii U VC is relatively limited, but here's my experience: control/lag-wise, both feel identical, and both feel perfectly fine to me. ![]() ![]() You then have apps like Bear and Apple Notes which aim to live somewhere in the middle. There are apps like Evernote which aim to be an “everything” bucket and apps like SimpleNote that only handle plain text notes. In time, I suspect, Agile Web Solutions, the masters of 1Password, will think of a way of achieving cloud sync, perhaps with a secure proprietary server.Note taking apps for Mac are a fun category to look at because of the variety of options on the market. I know the reason for this is security: you don't want all your passwords and bank details being bandied around some internet cafe. Both computer and iPhone must be present on the same network and talking to one another. While the 1Password data file, the Agile Keychain, syncs perfectly across all your Macs via Dropbox, the iPhone sync is still manual via network wifi. Simplenote has premium versions with added features for a few dollars (from $3.99 to suppress ads) while National Velocity is open source and, I presume, donations would be welcome.ġ Honourable exception to universal cloud syncing is the excellent 1Password. This combination of Simplenote and Notational Velocity is perfect and, what’s more, it’s free. This is something to sit on the desktop for quick note taking and you can be sure that all your ideas will be in your pocket when you leave home or office. There are keystokes for all the editing you’ll need and it works without a mouse. Absolutely no colour, no icons, no frippery. JustNotes is marginally prettier and reminds me of Apple’s Notes, but Notational Velocity has a very minimalist and straightforward presentation that I really like. Both Notational Velocity and JustNotes attempt to do the same thing and both do it well. I’ve tried both the desktop applications and Simplenote on the iPhone. There’s also a Dashboard widget called DashNote. And I was even more interested to hear that the Simplenote website offers synchronisation with a number of Mac desktop applications including Notational Velocity and JustNotes. So I was fascinated to hear the enthusiasm in a Mac Power Users podcast for Simplenote, a free iPhone app that does just what it says–simple, quick text notes. If your iPhone is out of wifi or 3G range you have a problem. And the Evernote iPhone application is particularly slow and downloads only what is needed at any particular time. ![]() I end up stuffing it with PDF files, images and all sorts of other files with the result that it isn’t the quickest application for opening and searching. Evernote is reasonably quick for text entry, but the problem with Evernote is that it is just too convenient. And OF is relatively slow to start if you want instant access to a note. I can make notes in OmniFocus, but the entry process can be a long-winded (it is, after all, a powerful application for managing tasks and projects). Quick notes, either entered on the iPhone or on the Mac, are essential sync material because you never know when you’ll need them. ![]() Even the iPhone app has to be synchronised over a local wifi and there is no sync between Macs. Bento, which I otherwise adore, is a big culprit here. ![]() Frankly, an application that doesn’t support data synchronisation is practically useless. ![]() Favourite apps that do this well are OmniFocus (which I sync via MobileMe), MacJournal (MobileMe), Evernote (proprietary) and Dropbox (proprietary). As bare minimum, I look for sync across Macs and iPhone/iPad and it has to be sync via the cloud rather than local wifi 1.
